What Products to Stock in a Healthy Vending Machine?

by | 4 comments

fruit_vending_machineWith new changing health regulations, one of the first questions to ask when considering buying a healthy vending machine is what products to stock.  Let me just say that this is a very expensive question to ask if you go to the wrong source.  There are new healthy vending franchises popping up every week and they all promise to provide you with the best healthy vending machine and the best support.  I’ve spoken to many of them and tried to get access to their products list and found that this is top secret, proprietary information.  If you are willing to spend $10,000 – $15,000 on a new machine then you can get the list. I’ve always told my customers in the past that they should just buy the healthy products at Sam’s Club, Costco, or even Whole Foods (which stocks more organic and healthy foods).  When you buy from local sources, you won’t pay for shipping costs, so you can save a lot of money this way. From the input we’ve received from other healthy vendors, here’s a list of some of the most popular healthy snacks to stock in your healthy vending machine.   Remember, you’ll want to have a good mixture of “good” (diet sodas and baked chips), “better” (nutrition shakes and protein bars), and “best” (fruits+veggies, organic options, etc.) healthy snacks to optimize your cash flow.  In addition, we recommend you put in some of your traditional unhealthy snacks and drinks to satisfy your customers who could care less about healthy snacks.

  • Boost Complete Nutrition Drinks
  • EAS Carb Control Shakes
  • Gatorade
  • Zero Water
  • Izze Sparkling Sodas
  • Diet Sodas
  • Sugarfree Energy Drinks (Monster + Red Bull do well)
  • Fiber One Bars
  • Clif Bars
  • Nutrigrain Bars
  • Special K Breakfast Bars
  • Squeeze Apple Sauce
  • Welch’s Fruit Snacks
  • Dole Fruit Cups
  • Beef Jerky
  • Trail Mix / Peanuts / Cashews / Almonds / Pistachios
  • Popchips
  • Baked Chips
  • Wheat Thins
  • Goldfish
  • Sugarfree Gum

However, there may be some additional healthy vending snacks that you won’t find locally and you may need to order them online.  So do you have to be part of the healthy vending franchise to get access to special healthy vending foods? Absolutely not!   Most of the healthy vending franchises get their products from United Natural Food International (UNFI), which is available to the public.  Keep in mind, however, that there are minimum order requirements. You can check them out at www.unfi.com We do provide our customers with a complete recommended product list when they buy multiple healthy vending machines from The Discount Vending Store.  It will include the bestselling healthy drinks, healthy snacks, and healthy entrée items along with the suggested retail price.  You will need to do a lot of testing to see what’s right for your specific market though.  The key to buying the product is the buy it at an affordable price so that your customers can afford it as well.  Most folks are willing to pay a little more for a healthy item but if you charge too much, they will keep buying the traditional junk food.  If you are interested in discovering just how affordable a new or pre-owned healthy vending machine can be, then give us a call at 1-855-200-VEND (8363)

That’s cool that things like beef jerky and Gatorade can be healthy options for your vending machine. Those are actually pretty delicious. You’d probably also want to have some unhealthy options as well so that your employees would still be able to get some sugar. But you’d just need to find a vending service that offers these more-healthy alternatives.

I am happy to have found this information concerning what products should be stocked in a healthy vending machine. I think that energy drinks and water are great ideas. Something to consider would be to help others to make healthier eating choices through the food and drinks they select from vending machines.
