Should I Invest in a Healthy Vending Franchise?

healthy for you vending reviewsIf you’re considering buying a healthy vending franchise from companies like Healthy You, Healthier 4U, or Naturals2Go, I have a few words of caution before you decide.

I have received too many calls and complaints lately from adventurous entrepreneurs who have heard the great sales pitches from the various business-in-a-box vending franchises that all claim to offer you a world of support to start up your business, a big warranty on the machines, locations for the machines, accounting software and the latest and greatest vending machines on the market.  Unfortunately, after you’ve listened to them for a few hours and checked their references, you realize that the price is quite exorbitant.

Vending Machine Franchise Success Depends On Location, Location, Location (and a couple more factors)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…the number one thing you need to succeed in vending is a good location.  The second is a sharp looking, reliable machine.  If you’re buying into one of the big box franchises for any other reason, then you’re a sucker.  Sure they will offer you a lot of extra fluff but it’s just not worth the money. Many franchises do offer locations as part of their package or you can upgrade for an additional $1,000 or so.  Please be very careful to not overpay for a location that is no good. I have personally heard from too many good people who were scammed by the company's vending locator. Be sure to check their reviews and ratings, and don't trust their referrals they send you because they will pay them to talk to you.  Further, you don’t have to be part of a franchise to get obtain good locations. There are plenty of good independent vending locators that you can hire, or you can do it yourself.

Most franchises also offer a warranty on the healthy vending combination machines and free phone support as well.  Let me just say that a warranty is only as good as the company that’s backing it up.  What are the chances that a one year old company will be around to honor their extended warranty? Many healthy vending franchises never live to see their warranties expire so please be very cautious of this. Recently we've been seeing companies offer a "lifetime warranty", but be sure to read the fine print.  By "lifetime warranty", some companies are only offering 50% off parts after the first year and then they raise their prices by two-fold in order to cover the 50% discount!

If you are new to vending or are looking into the Healthy Vending Business, then I can see how you might feel intimidated to do this alone. It sounds reassuring to spend thousands of dollars to "get the right education" before jumping into the business.  This is exactly how the franchisors wants you to feel. Starting a healthy vending business is not hard and at The Discount Vending Store we can help you succeed by providing you with a world of knowledge, on-site training on our machines, and protecting your pocket book at the same time.  Check out our blog for more secrets to success in vending or call us at 855-200-VEND(8363) and we’ll be happy to help. Further please post a comment below to share your experience with any of the vending franchises you have been involved with.

How are the sale prices of the products determined?

    Reply
    • TheDiscountVendingStore

Great question, in general the rule of thumb is to double or triple your cost of the product to get the sale price. Higher priced items can’t be doubled such as Red Bull, and lower priced items like water or 1 oz chips can be multiplied by higher like 4-5x your cost. Then you will typically round the price to a quarter. Good luck!

How much do you charge to put a custom wrap on a machine? What does a locator service typically charge to place one machine?

    Thanks

Some of our machines will include a custom wrap and others will require a small up-charge depending on the intensity of the design. You will have to contact the locator to find out more about their fees as they are all different. Thanks

In a previous answer you indicated you are unfamiliar with the InstaHealthy business opportunity. I also see you have… N2Go machines for sale. Do you have any InstaHealthy machines for sale? Have you had any of InstaHealthy’s partners/operators call and complain or try to sell their machines to Discount Vending? How does Discount Vending’s Triple Profit machine differ (or is better) than InstaHealthy’s machine? Thank you in advance for your time and comments.

InstaHealthy is still quite new and so I’m not getting their customers calling us trying to sell us their machines yet. From what I can tell, they use AMS machines which are good machines and quite comparable to the Triple Profit machines in size and product selections. It looks like they offer 24 different drink selections just like our Triple Profit machines. Having more than just 8-9 drink options is critical since your customers typically buy more drinks than snacks.

The drinks in their machines will be easy to load and can be changed from bottles and cans of different shapes and sizes without any adjusting, unlike many healthy franchise machines which require special augers and shims for each different product size. They will also have a guaranteed vend sensor just the like Triple Profit Machines. They are NAMA Certified, Made in America, ADA Accessible, and will track your inventory remotely just like the Triple Profit Machine.

The one really big difference with our Triple Profit machine is the ability to transform it into a snack machine, drink machine, or combo machine and you don’t need to tell us how it needs to be configured until after you find the location. We will store it for you for free until you find a location and then we configure to the needs of the location. Further, the machines can also take on any look you want since we customize the graphics to meet your needs or the needs of your customer. This is one of the best ways to get your machines into the really classy and high traffic locations. The best part of it all is we can still beat them in price even with these all the customization.

With the credit card fees can we get our own credit card processors, if we find better rates than the companies you recommend.

All of the credit card readers we provide require you to process the credit cards through them unfortunately. There may be different credit card readers that you can install yourself which would allow you to choose a different processor but I’m not familiar with them. Thanks

I have been considering Healthy You Vending when I came across your site. Now I am reconsidering. One feature that was appealing – the attachable centers(sections)that allows additional items(non-edible)to be sold such as earbuds, Chargers, cords, etc…. Do you have that or something similar?
Thank you for all the information

Great question Judy, we do sell the Seaga HY900 machines which is the Healthy You vending machine and they can come with the entree unit you are referring to. However we also have the Triple Profit machines which I would highly recommend because it is fully customizable meaning the vending trays that can be switched out from the snack and drink configuration to vend small items like K-cups for Coffee or T-Shirts, or Earbuds, chargers, electronics, etc. They can also vend larger items like Cup-o-Soup and other meals that are offered in the Healthy You entree units. Just give Discount Vending a call and we can help you out – 855-200-8363. Thanks

This is another example of the “gimmicks” that the Business in a Box Healthy Vending Franchises try to offer. Don’t buy into it!!! They will get you an account set up with UNFI (United Natural Foods International) which supposedly offers better rates, but it doesn’t even compare to the better rates you will find at your local Sams Club and Costco. You are much better off ordering it on-line at your local Big Box stores like Sams and then picking it up at the front door. This is cheaper because you don’t pay for shipping also. You may not have as big of an assortment of products to buy but honestly, that is a good thing. You should stock the normal items that are sold locally because that’s what your customers are familiar with and that’s what they are more likely to buy. For more information on where to buy your vending products, you can also check out our youtube video on that subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TanJjedlgRY

    Hi ,
I like the eloborate discussion in the post.. do the vending machines cater to custom products or only food and drinks that is available in super market? Say for example i want to package a custom bottle of buttermilk which is a healthy option and something that is not available at costco or walmart.. would i have to choose a bottle of a particular size? Also would i need a wifi installed on the machine for signalling the quantity sold and when the vending machine has to be restocked?

    Reply
    • TheDiscountVendingStore

The products you can vend in the machine will depend greatly on the type of vending machine you have. The Naturals 2 Go N2G4000 or N2G5000, the HealthyYOU HY900 and the Healthier 4 U machines are not very adjustable on the drink selections. They are set to vend 12 oz cans in certain selections and 16 oz bottles in other selections. They won’t vend square shaped items or any odd shapes. On the other hand, if you go with a Glass front machine where the drinks are dispensed using a coil, like the Triple Profit machine or the Duravend machine, then you will be just find with odd shaped drinks.

No wifi is needed to enable the inventory tracking. They will connect via cellular. The credit card reader can not only accept credit cards but it is also the means for tracking ALL of your inventory, whether the items were purchased with cash or credit. So as long as there is a cell phone signal where you install your machine, then you can be connected. If you are in a remote area where no cell signal is available, and you have the Nayax credit card reader, which we use on our Triple Profit and Duravend machines, then you will also have the option to connect via wifi. The Nayax card readers can connect via cellular as well as wifi. I hope this helps.

This website was an eye opener for me. I’m looking into more streams of revenue and came across vending machines. I talked on the phone for a few minute with one of the franchise style reps and $30k for 3 machines and the extras seem to be a decent price to start up with. They give the option to get connected with some of their Operators to talk to them and get some more insight from them as far as how they like it so far and their income and struggles they’ve had. I’m sure it would only be people who have made a success in this field and they’re used to help reassure potential investors that its a good option which is good, but I also want to hear any negative things that could be said or from not so successful people to see where they went wrong.

I’ll definitely be looking more into this niche as I get closer to being able to actually put money towards this.

One thing to note was that from the $30k mentioned, I wasn’t given specifics as to what equated to that amount, it was just a liquid cash investment number given to me to start up.

    Best of luck to all!

I have not heard of anyone buying machines from them so I can’t say a lot. I know they are a new company so you should definitely be cautious because of that. Here are some questions to ask when scoping out vending machines.
      1. How old is the company?
      2. Are their machines American Made, NAMA certified and ADA accessible? Do they have the guaranteed vend sensor? Do they have scrolling prices, time-out features, accept all forms of payment including mobile payments, and the credit card’s chip?
      3. Do they have a variety of machines to choose from or is it a one size fits all solution. Most companies only offer one machine and say it will work in every location. Nothing can be farther from the truth! At the Discount Vending Store, we provide machines that are customizable inside and out. It can be transformed into a snack only machine, drink only machine or a combo too. We will customize them for you and ship them right to the doorstep. Then if you need it changed later on, we can help you do that too. On the outside, we also place your logo, branding, graphics on the machines so they are unique to you and not the franchise.
      4. Obviously locations are important and please don’t spend twice as much as you need to in order to get good locations. There are plenty of great vending locators that can work for you and you don’t need to join an expensive franchise to find them. Try googling “Vending Locator”
      5. Training is certainly important too. However, you shouldn’t have to spend all of your retirement money in order to touch and feel, and get the necessary training. Does the company you are looking into allow you to see the machines and get trained on them before spending tens of thousands of dollars investing in them? The Discount Vending Store encourages you to sign up for the training and see for yourself the advantages of going with a them before you put one penny down. No one else offers this.

These are just a few of the questions I would raise before I invested tens of thousands of dollars into a healthy vending franchise. Good luck and give us a call if we can help.

I wonder, how many years the useful life of these machines is estimated and whether they can be easily upgraded.

    Thank you.

    • TheDiscountVendingStore

In general most vending machines will last 10-20 years as long as you keep up with normal maintenance repairs. It’s hard to say what type of payment devices we’ll be using 20 years from now and also what shapes of products we’ll be using. This will determine whether or not the machines can be upgraded to accommodate them or not.

WOW. Thanks so much to all who posted and for the incredibly insightful information gained by reading all the postings. I’m now completely re-thinking the idea of a franchise as I know I am completely and totally able to set up my own locations and control that aspect without a third party charging me for what could easily be poor results with a very high cost. I’m hoping to start up a self-employment opportunity to kick-start a new charitable organization that I’m involved in. The LAST THING we need is to get ripped off… what a disaster that would be to the people counting on our organization to help them!

I still think vending with healthy product could be a great investment that can only grow in popularity. I appreciated your candid answers to the questions posed, but I still have a ton of questions, one of them being- what is the chance of success in Wichita Kansas?

    Reply
    • TheDiscountVendingStore

Hi Tim, it looks like Wichita has around 400,000 people which would make it a great place to be a vendor… especially if you focus in on Healthy Vending. You see, you aren’t competing with normal vending machines. I’m sure most of the good locations are already taken by a normal vending machine, but if you come in with a bright colorful vending machine that specializes in Healthy products and accepts credit cards and mobile payments, then the business that has an old junk food machine will typically be happy to replace it with a newer machine with better products. Good Luck!!!

The best prevention against vandalism is placing your machine in a good, honest location where it’s in the open with lots of people to monitor it. However if you feel that you want to risk placing it in a secluded location, know that no amount of protection will keep out idiots that think it’s a game to break into vending machines. Some machines are better than others with vandal-proofing. You can also install an alarm system on the machine to help prevent vandalism on the vending machine. We sell these alarms on our website under the parts and accessories page.

Once the vending machine has been ordered, we typically can ship it out within 1-2 business days.

Thanks to all, I feel like I saved myself a lot of headache. So what’s the real cost and benefit. Can One make a good living on 10 to 20 locations? How much work is required to keep the machines packed and can you hook us up with companies to order from when we want to get started? Additionally, what happens if a location is under performing? Can we simply pull out and find a new one?

    Reply
    • TheDiscountVendingStore

Ray, profitability is the million dollar question. As merely distributors of vending machines, we can’t say how much you will make in the business. I would advise you to talk to other vendors in the industry, but be sure to ask them if they are getting a commission to talk to you as most of the referrals from the Vending Franchises do get paid to talk to you.

The best place to buy your product is Sams Club or Costco because it’s local, affordable and contains all the popular items that your customers would normally buy.

If your location is performing poorly, then yes, you can just pull it and find a better location. That’s the beauty of this business. You didn’t invest thousands of dollars on the location like you would if this was a brick and mortar business. I hope that helps. Good luck!

I have worked with too many Healthy You customers to count as many of them end up coming to us to sell us their machines after they’ve been in business for a year or so. Now I’m not here to defame them in any way, but it’s extremely sad to get calls from their customers month after month asking me to buy their brand new machines which have been just sitting in storage and not on location. Although I’ve never been a Healthy You customer myself, I’ve seen their training material, their machines, and talked to their customers. Yes they have been around a while, and they have good training to help you get started and we resell their machines so we are certainly qualified to say that they are decent machines. However, with all the first hand accounts of failed Healthy You businesses that I’ve heard from, I couldn’t recommend you buying from them. You can call me as I’d love to talk to you more about the Healthy Vending industry. We see all types of vending machines here and so we know what works well and what doesn’t. I’m not really familiar with Karma Box, but if it’s a franchise I can tell you that you should stay clear of it. Franchises in the vending industry are NOT a good thing. It is not rocket science here. You should only join a franchise if the name carries weight with it. No one on the street has ever heard of Karma Box, Grow Healthy Vending, HealthyYOU, Fresh Healthy Vending or any of the others. They are all way over priced and it’s just not necessary to buy into it in order to get the same support, training, and better machines elsewhere…. like The Discount Vending Store. The Discount Vending Store sells machines that are just as good if not better. Ours come with Free Storage, Free Tech support, Free Customization, Free Training, and a warranty also- All this for less than half the price of what Healthier 4U charges. I guarantee you will get a quicker return on investment by getting twice as many machines for the same price.

Actually all you need to have is the credit card reader activated on the machine. This will track all of your sales, whether by cash or credit and it also tracks which products sold. Nayax, Air Vend, and USA Technologies credit card readers will all work great. If you want to add a different software tracking software such as Vendsoft or Cantaloupe you can certainly use them but it is not necessary.

How much benefit is a locator? What exactly do they do? If I have locations in mind and can get to the people that make decisions regarding vending, is there any added benefit of paying a locator?

    Reply
    • TheDiscountVendingStore

Great question Matt. A locator is good if you don’t have any good leads yourself or you’re too busy to doing the contacting yourself. Locators can be really hit and miss from what I’ve seen. Sometimes they can snatch you great locations and other times they aren’t so good. If you have a lot of machines to locate, I think a locator is useful, although not perfect. Some locators will do everything and close the deal with you as well, while others will do all the phone calls and get you an appointment where you need to close the deal in person. If the location is good that they help you secure, then it’s definitely worth the money. If the location isn’t producing, then you should find a new one and most good locators will find you a replacement for partial the cost as part of their warranty program.

Thanks for these posts. Curious about level of income that can be expected. I’m sure it’s all over the place but based on the few discussions above it seems as though 250 in sales a weeks is pretty good, less 10% commission maybe, and assuming margins are 20-30%… is that about 250-25-75=150 in profits per week per machine if in decent locations? If you’re looking for an option to replace $5000/mo in income, does that mean you should expect to be managing about 30 machines to get to that level… If all goes well?

There are a few different credit card readers that can be installed on the machines, but they all charge between $8-15 / month as a flat rate, plus 5-7% of all the credit card sales. This may seem high but I can assure you that you that the fees are worth it as credit card paying customers will typically spend more and your sales will typically increase 25-50%.

However if they are used to receiving a commission from previous vendors, then they may want one from you too. 10% of the sales would be an average commission to offer. I wouldn’t offer more unless you are selling $250+ / week at the location. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I am interested in more information regarding start up costs and securing locations. Thank you for your time.

The biggest start up cost is the cost of the machine. Prices are listed on our website and vary depending on new or refurbished. A new basic machine, like a Naturals 2 Go machine will cost you around $4000. Our premier customizable healthy Triple Profits machines are much better and will cost between $5000-6000. Then the next big cost is a location which will cost you approximately $400-600 to hire a good locator. Then you will need approximately $200 to fill the machine with product and extra change. Other than this, you will need a vehicle to transport the product which most people will just use their personal vehicle. A truck or van works fine unless you get 10+ machines at which point you may want to upgrade to a larger vehicle. You can move the machine in the back of a pickup truck or you can hire a mover to move it and they will charge around $100-200. Feel free to call me if you have additional questions about it. Thanks for the comment.

My roommate and I, a financial worker and personal trainer, have been discussing vending machines as a potential investment for awhile now. We are trying to gather some more concrete information.

We agree that the upfront ($110,000+) investment for [franchise] Machines is steep, and that less upfront cost and more initial startup work is a less risky way to go. I am interested to hear back and know what my options are.

I agree that is quite steep and you don’t need to invest that much money in order to be successful. Give us a call and we can discuss your options for getting machines at an affordable price and also getting the tools necessary to succeed. 1-855-200-VEND (8363)
